This scene is perhaps the most famous of Puccini's writing. The music supports the hesitation and excitement of Rodolfo and Mimi as they fall in love. While searching in the dark for a lost key, Rodolfo slowly reaches out to touch Mimi's hand and their love innocently begins to soar. Mimi tries to pretend nothing is happening, but as the scene progresses, their love is undeniable and the scene ends with them hopelessly in love. The dialogue leading up to Rodolfo's aria is effectively speech-like but still melodic. Notice how their dialogue flows easily into his aria. The ending of Rodolfo's aria is followed by Mimi's aria. He sings of hopes and dreams and she sings of her humble life and her anticipation of spring. The final duet is emotional and overwhelming.

The plot of the opera is based on a bohemian romance; its emotional settings and dramatic developments give Puccini a vehicle for beautifully crafted melodies. The power of this duet is carried to the end of the opera as Mimi dies from consumption in the arms of Rodolfo. Puccini's ability to develop characters is extraordinary and has made this work one of the most successful romances in Italian opera.
